Palisades    7/11     68844-69201 (357 mi.) Continued on a beautiful ride through the mountains, past Sun City, and into the plains of the great valley of southern Idaho. Stopped for some bizarre scenery at Craters of the Moon, which had very interesting geological information explaining the formation of the valley, up to and including Yellowstone. The scenery became very lush again after Idaho Falls, and I continued on to camp next to the Palisades Reservoir. Craters of the Moon National Park Continued on into Wyoming, where I picked up my route from a year ago. Lunch in Afton, past Smoot, and back into the same construction that was there last year. Blew through Kemmerer and picked up 80 to Green River. Very hot, desert terrain. Stopped off at a very low-key, yet very entertaining bar to wait out the heat before heading on to Flaming Gorge. Got a tip to try the Sheep Creek Campground, which turned out to be more of a marina for motorhomes and trailers (minimal tent sites). However, ended up sharing space with some guys from Casper. Stayed up quite late by the fire drinking beer and shooting the breeze. Montrose    7/13     69470-69727 (257 mi.) Got up somewhat late and went for a ride in the speedboat. Two of the guys went water skiing, and I gave it an honest try as well, although I couldn't seem to break my snow-skiing habits long enough to get out of the water. Had a great time anyway. Got on the road and rode through more desolate terrain until I got to Montrose early in the evening for the start of the Valkyrie Ride-in. Hung out with Dean and some of the other HCC'ers I knew, but crashed fairly early. |
