New Orleans     Thu 5/10     5888-6030     (142 mi.)
Got up, saw the Szczechowski family off, and repacked the bike before heading west on rte 90
through the Bayou (and the bugs!).
Rode past the airport and across Lake Pontchartrain Causeway
(the most extravagant 25 miles of bridge I've ever seen, only to save 15 minutes of
time vs. driving around the lake) to the Abita Brew Pub.
Abita had good food and beer and very cool pint glasses.
Rode back across the causeway and down St. Charles St. to a small hotel
on the edge of the French Quarter.
Cleaned up a bit and walked down to the Quarter
and the Crescent City Brewery.
Met a German couple from Hamburg and had a nice
conversation in German. They were going to cruise from LA to Alaska, surprising
some friends from a previous cruise. Ate a great pile of Cajun Shrimp at Bubba Gump’s,
went back to the hotel to relax a bit, then out to a small nightclub where not much
was going on.
Met a very strange Belgian guy who told me weird stories about his big
round bed. Listened to music until about 3:00 am.
New Orleans     Fri 5/11     6030-6030     (0 mi.)
Got up fairly late and headed over to Bourbon St. for breakfast. Found a nice
outdoor café that had good Bloody Mary’s to go. Walked around Bourbon St, the
riverfront, Jackson Square, and the French Market. Had another pile of shrimp
at Bubba’s before going back to the hotel to rest up. Headed back out to Bourbon St.
about 7:00, where the party had started!
Listened to a number of different bands,
including Rock, Blues, Jazz, R&B, and Soul. Bought Voodoo-Brew tap handle and went
to the “Dungeon”. Had several Hurricanes and a “Midnight Potion”. Went to a
late-night club again where I listened to more music with a nice young local couple.
Shreveport     Sat 5/12     6030-6370     (340 mi.)
Got a bit of a late start, but headed out about 10:30 towards Shreveport.
Beautiful ride along the back roads of Louisiana! Dodged a brief thunderstorm
and got to Shreveport about 7:30. Found a very unique B&B that was once a party
house for the Governor of Louisiana (who is now in jail). Nice pool, hot tub,
and bar areas.
Extremely hospitable owners,
and many other interesting guests
were staying there (including some bikers). Stayed up late swapping stories and
listening to music.
